What is a host family? |
A host family is one that welcomes a young foreigner (girl or boy) called an au pair, a French word that means “on par or equal”, into their home for a period of time and under previously agreed conditions.
Basic profile of the host family:
The au pair will be a member of your family during your stay, with the same rights and obligation.
Basic profile of the host family:
- Family with children (single parent or couple).
- At least one of the children is a minor.
- If the family has children under 2 years of age, it is recommended that the au pair - even if she has experience caring for children in that age range - is not fully responsible for the child. We remind host families that an au pair is not a professional childcare or language teacher.
The au pair will be a member of your family during your stay, with the same rights and obligation.
What obligations does the host family have?
During the reception period an exchange takes place:
In exchange, the family offers:
The host family will organize the tasks in such a way that the au pair has enough free time to attend classes as well as for privacy, rest and leisure.
The au pair will be part of her host family for the duration of the stay, which is why she/he must be treated as another member of the family, with the same rights and obligations.
- The au pair looks after the children of the family.
- She/He speaks to them in her native language or in English or Spanish as the family prefers.
- She/He can also help with simple household chores.
In exchange, the family offers:
- Accommodation in a single room.
- Full maintenance.
- Weekly financial allowance.
- Vacation period as appropriate.
- Other requirements apply depending on location, such as assistance for public transport.
- If the au pair is not from the EU, the family contributes 50% of the health insurance.

Current legislation
It is a program of cultural exchange and coexistence regulated by an international agreement.
- 1969: First European Agreement on “Au Pair” placement, Strasbourg on November 24.
- 1986: Spain ratifies said agreement.
- 2018: Transposition of the EU Directive on entry and residence requirements for third-country nationals. (Title III)
