What is an au pair? |
The au pair cultural exchange program is a wonderful opportunity to live an experience in another country and through immersion learn about its language, culture and customs.
This cultural exchange consists of living with a family, receiving lodging, full board and weekly pocket money in exchange for help with childcare and some housework for a certain number of hours of your time, in Spain usually between 25 to 30 hrs.
You will have free time to attend Spanish language lessons, rest, socialize or go sightseeing.
The minimum and maximum duration of an au pair stay in Spain goes from 1 month to a year.
Short stays go from one to three months and usually during summer time although it is worth trying at any time of the year as some host families – especially if they are hosting for the first time – can be looking for a short stay at any given moment.
Long stays usually go from six to twelve months and mostly cover school year from September till end of June.

- 1969: First European Agreement on “Au Pair” placement, Strasbourg on November 24.
- 1986: Spain ratifies said agreement.

During your stay in Spain there may be situations that can be handled more calmly with the appropiate insurance coverage.
- Your health is the most important thing.
- If you are from the EU, you have right to get medical assistance if you bring your EU HEALTH CARD, but even so, there will be many health services that are not included or that do not mirror those that you can receive back in your EU country.
- If you are a non-EU citizen, then you must bring a private medical and travel insurance to receive medical assistance in case you need it. Non-EU citizens face the cost of such insurance, but Spanish host families have to reimburse you with 50% of the cost of such insurance for the time you are their au pair.
- Civil liability can also be a headache: accidentally damaging family assets, losing the keys to host family home that may lead to changing locks...
- Au pair guarantees, such as being able to temporarily stay in a hotel if coexistence does not work out, provides peace of mind to your trip.
- Travel assistance, luggage, etc.
